>> terry: in the news this saturday morning, a grass fire leads to a surprising discovery. we'll have the latest on the drug bust in the bay view. get it while you can. rush to get the controversial delicacy that will be illegal come tomorrow. i'm terry mcsweeney. let's check the forecast. here is frances dinglasan. >> good morning everyone. depending on where you are, waking up to sunny skies or gray skies. here is a live view from mount tam. you see the clouds over parts of the bay. it will be nice today. sunny especially in the interior valleys but for this morning we'll see coastal drizzle by lunchtime. wide range of temperatures, 60s near the coast to near 80

degrees and sea breeze picks up by 4:00 this afternoon. then by this evening, clouds still linger, temperatures coming down to the low 70s and pretty much 60s all day today near the coast but i'll have the accu-weather seven-day forecast and what to expect for 4th of july. >> terry: this morning the investigation is under way into what san francisco firefighters found in the bayview district yesterday. they went to put out a grass fire and instead found another kind of grass. now people want to know who was growing all that marijuana. john alston has the. >> reporter: this is what firefighters stumbled upon, 28 fully grown marijuana plants which police packed into evidence sacks. the street value an estimated $75,000. the whole thing was a shock to next-door neighbor michael williams a local pastor. >> i think about weed that is growing but not stuff that is growing inside of the house.

>> reporter: it was a raging grass fire that tore up the hill near the interchange. flames got as far as the back fence. investigators are looking into whether this was started by people at a nearby homeless encampment. they broke through a front door of an empty house to drag the hoses through. that is where they found the marijuana grow in two back bedrooms. it had an air filtration system. the pot smell was unmistakable. >> i don't know what marijuana smells like, i was watching television. my neighbors came next-door and said there was a fire outside. i went outside. i didn't know anything about the marijuana. >> reporter: pg&e shut off power to the house. wiring bypassed the electrical meter which is typical in illegal operation. they are more often stumbling upon these pot operations.

>> we're going to have a lot of people that are going to stretch boundaries and it would be common to find more of these types of situations. >> reporter: police say they found no paperwork a legitimate growing operation. they have not found the people that rented the house. they could face charges of growing marijuana and stealing electricity. >> terry: suspended san francisco sheriff ross mirkarimi will be back in front of the ethics commission july 18th when his attorneys will be able to call witnesses. yesterday a bomb scare interrupted day two of the misconduct hearing. on the stand he denied one of key charges that led to his suspension that he tried to convince witnesses not to testify against him. in march, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor false imprisonment with an argue with his wife in which her arm was bruised when he grabbed her. >> at any time did you dissuade

anyone from any law enforcement investigation? >> never. >> at any time did you ever ask anyone to destroy any evidence? >> never. the mayor testified that he suspended him because of actions of direct consequences. his wife's attorney says that she will testify either in person or by video. this morning san jose police are investigating a fatal stabbing after officers found a man bleeding in a parking lot last night. it happened around 11:30 in the 1300 block of winchester boulevard. they pronounced the man dead a short time later. that is the 20th homicide of the year. firefighters confirm they are looking for a body near pier 32, the exact area where a man disappeared after monday's giants' game. they are launching a volunteer search in about 25 minutes from

right now. she was last seen on pier 32 about 11:00 monday night. they feared he may have fallen into the bay. firefighters are right now checking out reports of a body there at pier 32. yesterday his family went back to the pier to coordinate a private search for the 27-year-old krektsz officer. his best friend is leading the search. >> 30 seconds i got in the car. i looked up and he was gone. >> i'm hoping he is still alive. >> the family was planning on starting their search at 8:30. again, san francisco fire on the scene looking for a body, reports of a body found near pier 32. coastguard suspended their search on tuesday. if you like foie gras, today is the last day you can buy it in california. continuing investigations by the

he france begins with former champion that he used performance enhancing drugs. they filed formal doping charges against lance armstrong. they can't criminally prosecute him but they can strip him of awards. there is evidence that he used banned substances including steroids. he has been denying those charges for years now. a fire in beverly hills has caused severe damage to a reality tv star. recognize this? fans of real housewives of beverly hills, home where lisavanderpump lived. flames broke out on night. vanderpump has since sold the house and moved out. >> the marriage of tom cruise

and katie holmes is apparently over. she announced to a lawyer that she filed for divorce to her husband of five years. they were married in 2006. website tmz reports is demanding sole custody of their six-year-old daughter. the news surprised the entertainment industry and apparently it surprised cruise as well who was shooting a film in iceland and seemed surprise. he doesn't have a divorce attorney and wasn't notified ahead of time. hard way to find out that is your wife is leaving you. >> not fun. >> let's talk about something more pleasant like weather. >> weather, seems like it's not going to be any fun in some locations, sunshine will break out. some blue skies. they are behind coit tower as we look up towards coit tower from our offices in san francisco

this morning. but we will see more sunshine this afternoon. look for a high of 56 in san francisco. current is 61 in san jose. we've got a patchy coastal drizzle and it's going to stick around parts of the day. i thought it one gone by morning but some of the forecast models are staying around a little longer. cloudy along the coast. milder temperatures and a little bit cooler than normal in some of the inland locations. that makes it a bit more comfortable. we have an area of low pressure, this trough, air circulating counterclockwise and that is bringing some of the cooler weather with the cloud cover this morning. as i show you the forecast model you see how it pulled back to the coast but it doesn't quite clear the coast even in the afternoon. with this latest model, see this area of green, there could be possible drizzle even in the afternoon. this kind of effects the giants game and also the opening of the

marine county fair. temperatures will be comfortable in the 60s and 70s and near 80 near the bay. cloudy conditions especially along the coast, partly cloudy as you head around the peninsula. 75 in redwood city. flight arrival delays, 56 in downtown san francisco for the game. 74 in san rafael and 81 in calistoga. more sunshine with temperatures in the low 70s except for berkeley at 68. then we'll be climbing into the upper 70s to low 80s around livermore, 79, 80 in pittsburg, 80 in morgan hill. 67 in monterey. wide range of temperatures, 60s to 80s. fairly typical but we're not going to get as warm as we do in inland locations. once the clouds clear, more sunshine for everybody. tomorrow, very similar conditions as the trough moves through northern a california and oregon and then high

>> terry: topping our news, updating a situation we reported earlier. coastguard continues to search around pier 32 for a man that disappeared after monday's giants game. he was last seen on pier 32 about 11:00 monday night. a friend who was with him fears that he may have fallen into the bay. coastguard crews to rush of a report of a body in the bay but that report turns out not to be true. the family went back to the pier to coordinate a private search for the 27-year-old corrections officer. they are beginning a volunteer search and coastguard officially suspended their search on tuesday but they are back out

there right nowfter responding to that earlier report. massive summer storms are blamed for two deaths and 2 million people without power. in virginia, half a million. 400,000 in washington, d.c. and 300,000 in ohio. power lines fell like dominoes crushing a passing truck. they everyone environment was a 90-year-old woman when a tree fell on to her home. a second person dpeid when a tree fell onto a car. new this morning, president obama is calling on all americans to help provide relief for colorado wildfire victims. after surveying the wildfire in colorado springs, the president declared the state a major disaster area. second death was confirmed where the first fatality was

discovered on tuesday. some 350 homes are in ruins. president obama met in person with fire victims promising federal aid but he did not stop there. weekly address from colorado springs asked every american that can afford it to pitch in. >> america, i hope you remember folks during times of need. this is unusual, we don't do weekly address like this but it's a good opportunity to focus attention on problem. we never know it may be our community. >> terry: president also praised firefighters, california sent two fire fighting planes and members of national guard. he ordered the special airplanes that can drop 3,000 gallons at a time. >> a lot of things are changing in california this weekend. starting tomorrow we start the fiscal year, we see the series of budget cuts impacting children, college students and

state workers. here is state capital correspondent nannette miranda. >> reporter: just in time for the 4th of july holiday, visitors can enjoy the stanford mansion, maybe drop by the governor's mansion. parted of the list of 70 state parks that were slated to close july 1st because of budget cuts. now only one, providence mountain in san bernardino remains doomed. despite a $31 million line item veto, most will stay open at least a few more weeks thanks to private donations. >> this is kind of a reprieve. it's incumbent to figure out good long term solutions. >> but no one is coming to the rescue of college students. cal grants will be 5 percent smaller, mostly for those that attend private schools but it also applies to students in

public colleges. >> they are picking on the weak. >> the new budget is triple whammy for one student. the spending pan cuts welfare from four years to years. now her child care is at risk and as soon as her grades were up she wanted to apply for a cal granted. >> our resources have been taken from us. it's very difficult. >> in all governor brown slashed another $200 million from the budge using line item veto authority. he is putting that money in reserve to boost it to $1 billion for emergencies. the money for cal fire may not be enough? >> if we have a bad fire season, if the cost of fighting those fires out strips the $92 million we have to go for more. >> the money could be better used to cuts to social programs

instead of letting it sit in a bank account. >> city colleges accreditation is in jeopardy for not adequately dealing with state funding cuts. the paper acquired an evaluation for the next week's expected release. there is can he fish en system for failure to assess declining funds. they say administrators have done expenditures in line with available cash. new fiscal year that starts tomorrow for bart and caltrain means higher fares kick in for riders. bart says this is the last in a series of inflation based increases over the past six years. caltrain fare hikes is to encourage riders to use the regional card system to pay. another fare hike next july can

freedom school is program for underserved kids. it started in 1964 to help black children to help black children during the civil rights movement. this year they are of having a hard time finding kids, lyanne melendez tells us why. >> welcome to freedom school, a place to nourish the body and the soul. here they learn to not be afraid to express themselves. >> some kids are shy. so when they see other kids do it, it allows them to come out. >> it builds up their confidence while engaging them academically. >> so success does not elude them in math and science. >> reverend renard allen in

western addition conducts program. students learn more about their culture and therefore themselves. his 7-year-old shani. >> her mother says shani joined the program her reading has improved. >> i notice she is more confident reader. >> parents are encouraged to participate with kids like that. >> they like to see mom involved. i'm very involved and hands on. >> despite what it has to offer, freedom school has seen fewer kids this year. reverend blames in part on the economy. >> people are moving foreclosures have affected us. >> many black families have moved to more affordable cities. the reverend is still trying to encourage other kids and their families to join the program

>> terry: this morning we have a report about a bay area man that purchased an electric car. his landlord wouldn't let him plug it in to charge it up. he came to michael finney for help and here is what happened. >> reporter: kyle, good afternoon. >> richard is doing business in rather odd place, inside his new car. >> he is set up with his computer and phone and even a

shirt and tie. he would rather be in real office but richard is stuck in his car -- waiting for this. >> today i set my car for two and a half hours and i was able to charge my car about 60%. >> he spends 12 hours a week skgt in his car dining business at free electric car plug-in station. it's not that he likes the scenary or salt air but this is one of the only ways he can charge up his new chevy volt. >> i love the view from here. but to is it in your car for four and a half hours is invented. it would be more convenient in the building which i live and pay rent. >> but he cannot. when we last saw richard he was upset. his landlord at this san francisco high-rise would not let him plug his car in. even though the chevy volt only needs an ordinary outlet and he

you terry. wake up. >> we do have cloudy conditions. we have varying conditions around the bay area right now. behind us, in santa cruz it's gray but some areas already sunny and it will warm up nicely. another live shot. you see the low clouds that came in from the coast overnight stretched well inland starting to push back, but there is some patchy coastal drizzle, as well. with live doppler 7 hd you can actually pinpoint where the cloud cover is. you see the gray clouds over the coast. but vallejo, sunny and also in concord, inland valleys some parts are already clear. san jose already seeing partly sunny conditions as we will. so right now, temperatures are already up to 70 degrees in antioch. 62 in concord. 57 in san francisco. and 64 in san jose.
